There is a growing demand for pharmaceutical and biomedical scientists in academia. Filling these positions with well qualified applicants is becoming more difficult, in part due to an unprecedented growth in the number of colleges of pharmacy nationally and the realities of securing extramural research grant funding. However, numerous opportunities exist for individuals interested in an academic career. The goal of this roundtable is to familiarize graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other scientists with the variety of academic positions that exist in research centered universities through those whose primary mission is pharmacy education. The myths and realties encountered in different collegiate environments will be discussed. While tenure and promotion vary widely in different departments at different universities, a fundamental look at academic expectations will be presented. Speakers will also discuss additional opportunities and other roles they have played (e.g., grant reviewer, editor, administrator, consultant, and entrepreneur) throughout their careers.
