Drug efflux transporters are a class of ATP Binding Cassette (ABC) membrane proteins that are responsible for active transport of a variety of drugs across biological membranes. The most common efflux transporters, P-glycoprotein, multidrug resistance associated protein (MRP) and breast cancer resistant protein (BCRP) actively remove a wide range of structurally dissimilar molecules against the concentration gradient across the membrane. In addition to being responsible for multidrug resistance in cancer chemotherapy, these transporters present a significant obstacle for drug delivery across the blood brain barrier, epithelial cells of the placenta and intestine, ocular tissues and hepatocytes. The aim of this roundtable is to identify challenges to drug delivery posed by the efflux transporters and possible ways to circumvent the problem.
