Zen and the Art of Preformulation Science
Neelima Phadnis, Ph.D.,
Neurogen
Friday, May 4, 2007
Noon to 1:00pm ET (1600 - 1700 UTC)
Cost: Free
Summary:
Advances in science and technology have contributed towards a
growing arsenal of methodologies for studying molecules and their
interactions in systems of pharmaceutical interest. The screening
process- preformulation, leverages available methodologies to
support a wide array of activities at various stages of a typical
industrial R&D program. To a relative newcomer in an industrial
setting, the business approach to the screening process may appear
complex. This talk will familiarize the audience with different
approaches to industrial preformulation programs, summarize the
evolution of the field, current thinking and potential areas of
growth in the next few years.
Topics that will be covered:
- What is preformulation?
- How do preformulation activities fit into today's industrial R&D
set up?
- What do young scientists need to know when they enter or interface
with a preformulation group?
- Dr. Phadnis' own experiences highlighted with references to 1-3
case studies of relevance.
Presenter Bio:
Dr. Phadnis is part of the Pharmaceutical Sciences team at
Neurogen Corp. Prior to this, she worked at GlaxoSmithKline and
Schering Plough, where she contributed to the rapid development of a
variety of dosage forms such as fast acting tablets, quick
disintegrating tablets, lozenges, chewing gum, soft chews and topical
semisolids. Her efforts resulted in successful product launches for
brands such as Panadol, TUMS, NiQuitin, Claritin and Dr. Scholl's. In
her current role, Dr. Phadnis builds on previous professional
experience in the areas of preformulation, formulation development,
leadership, project management and problem solving so that company
objectives are met.
Dr. Phadnis is a proud recipient of GSK Impact Awards, a USP
Fellowship, ISWOP scholarship and AAPS' 1995 Proctor & Gamble Award.
In 2005-2006, Dr. Phadnis served as the chair of AAPS' Preformulation
Focus Group. Novel applications of techniques and novel techniques for
application in the area of preformulation-formulation research
continue to fuel her professional interest.
Dr. Phadnis received her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, M.
Pharm from Gujarat University and B. Pharm from University of Delhi.
