Formulation Design & Development
The Formulation Design & Development Section is comprised of members from many
diverse backgrounds in industry, regulatory and academia who share a common interest
in the area of formulation design, research and development - a multidisciplinary
field drawing upon the physical, chemical, biological and engineering sciences.
The primary goal of this section is to unite multiple scientific disciplines in
a forum where they can share experimental results, consider new formulation and
dosage form technologies, and discuss issues and concerns regarding the design and
development of formulations/drug products for all dosage forms. This Section collaboratively
interfaces with other sections which focus on pre-formulation, biopharmaceutics,
formulation strategies, and manufacturing process optimization.
Aspects of formulation design and development include the study of dosage forms
for drug delivery via all routes of administration wherein the dosage form encompasses
the formulation, process by which it is made, and primary packaging. The Section’s
focus on development includes product design, delivery systems and technology, stability,
quality, and performance both in vitro and in vivo that is appropriate to its development
stage.

The Formulation Design and Development Section will be the premier worldwide forum
for scientists dedicated to the design and development of all dosage forms.
FDD Section Mission
The Formulation Design and Development Section provides a dynamic international
forum for the exchange of formulation-related knowledge among scientists to enhance
their contributions to health. We offer timely formulation-related scientific programs,
on-going education, opportunities for networking, and professional development by:
- Providing forums for the free interchange and dissemination of scientific knowledge,
particularly in the area of formulation design and development;
- Fostering the scientific and technical growth of scientists in the discipline;
- Promoting and recognizing excellence in the discipline;
- Encouraging the support of basic academic, industrial, and regulatory research programs
and the development of mutually beneficial relationships;
- Encouraging students to enter the discipline by strengthening and increasing the
viability of academic programs in formulation design and development;
- Collaborating with and supporting other AAPS sections, focus groups, and other professional/scientific
organizations; and
- Informing the public of major advances in formulation design and development.
