The Protein Aggregation and Immunogenicity Focus Group was formed to study protein
aggregation and immunogenicity and to begin answering some questions that seemingly come
up during every conference that is held on protein aggregation. Ideally and very globally,
we are striving for an understanding of the qualitative and quantitative aspects of
aggregation of therapeutic protein products in engendering various types of immune
responses to product. As you know, such immune responses can be a major stumbling
block to product development and have plagued even licensed protein therapeutics.
The goals are to 1) establish a core group of interested investigators; 2) define
the questions that need to be answered to understand the impact of protein aggregation
on immunogenicity; 3) establish a research plan to answer these questions; 4) establish
which groups will be responsible for executing aspects of the research plan; and
5) convene to examine results, establish a group to write a manuscript based on results,
and discuss follow-up studies. The membership of this group will contain experts in
biophysical chemistry and in immungenicity.
