About the Preformulation Focus Group
Purpose
The Preformulation Focus Group was established in 1993 to bring together all AAPS
members with a common interest in the broad area of preformulation research. Preformulation
research involves the characterization of physical and chemical properties of both
small and large-molecule drug substances or drug products, and is performed at both
the early-stage and mid-stage development in pharmaceutical development and manufacturing.
Preformulation research helps to define the ingredients needed in a pharmaceutical
formulation to achieve a desired product profile. The ultimate goal of the group
is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas and development of strategies which
improve our capabilities in this important area of research applied to both small
and large molecules.
Specific Objectives
- Provide a forum for information exchange of issues and advancements relating to
solid, suspension and liquid-state characterization of chemical entities, active
pharmaceutical ingredient, drug substance, excipients and early phase development
of pharmaceutical dosage forms and delivery systems
- Promote and disseminate novel scientific advances in Preformulation in the areas
of discovery and development of drug substance and drug product through themed meetings
and workshops in PPB, FDD and Biotec sections.
- Encourage and promote joint programs with other focus groups, academia and regulatory
agencies e.g., FDA, USP and other national regulatory agencies worldwide.
- Strengthen the membership through different portals such as the focus group newsletters,
student chapters, conferences, volunteer activities and AAPS list serve.
- Support nominations of preformulation scientists for AAPS Awards.

Graduate Student Information Exchange
This focus group meets annually at the AAPS. Discussion is centered on goals achieved
in the past year and objectives to be accomplished in the coming year.
We invite graduate students with interest in preformulation and formulation to be
a part of these annual forums. Members of the steering committee will be re-elected
and students are encouraged to participate.
