      AAPS and Millipore are pleased to announce the Excellence in Ligand Binding Assays Award to be awarded at the 2009 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference, June 21-24, in Seattle, Washington. This program is designed to recognize excellence in ligand binding assays within the pharmaceutical sciences. The award will promote the science and technology of ligand binding assays.
      Selection will be made based on the submitted abstracts and summaries of those individuals judged by the committee to have provided the most outstanding contributions in ligand binding assays within the pharmaceutical sciences.
      Any abstract that is submitted to the BIOTEC Section for the National Biotechnology Conference and employs ligand binding assay technology will be given consideration for the award. The primary presenting author will be awarded $1,000 and a plaque.

      AAPS and Eli Lilly and Company are pleased to announce the Graduate Student Symposium to be held at the 2009 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference, June 21-24, in Seattle, Washington. The program is designed to recognize excellence in graduate education in the fields of pharmaceutical biotechnology. Students will be selected to participate in the symposium by the AAPS Selection Committee on the basis of abstracts submitted to the committee. Applicants in one of the above or associated fields of study may be nominated by their Ph.D. thesis advisor on the form provided. On the basis of submitted abstracts and summaries, students will be selected to present their research during the Graduate Symposium at the AAPS National Biotechnology Conference. Selection will be made on the basis of those students judged by the committee to have provided the most outstanding contributions in the above fields through their graduate research. Each student selected will receive a cash award of $250.00 and a complimentary National Biotechnology Conference registration. In addition, travel expenses will be reimbursed (maximum $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international) following the meeting.

The AAPS Journal Manuscript Award

      Awarded every other year, The AAPS Journal Manuscript Award (formerly AAPS PharmSci Manuscript Award) is intended to recognize outstanding contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences as demonstrated by the author(s) in the quality and originality of a manuscript published in the official journal of AAPS, The AAPS Journal.
      The scientific merit and impact of the published work should be the principles used in selecting the paper. Scientific merit will be judged by the editors of The AAPS Journal, providing a ranking among the top five manuscripts nominated by the editors. Additional criteria that measure impact include the number of citations of the paper and the number of visits to the web site containing the paper. All papers published in The AAPS Journal during the preceding two years will be reviewed. The recipient of the award need not be a member of AAPS.
      Award recipients will receive a $2,000 honorarium (divided equally between the authors), a framed certificate that will be presented at the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, November 8-12, in Los Angeles, California, and travel expenses for the principal (or corresponding) author (up to $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international).


AAPS Meritorious Manuscript Award

      The AAPS Meritorious Manuscript Award recognizes outstanding achievement in the pharmaceutical sciences as demonstrated by the author in the quality and originality of a manuscript published in the official AAPS journal, Pharmaceutical Research. The scientific impact of the published work should be the principle used in nominating the paper. This could be based on new concepts or new experimental procedures. The paper must have been published at least two years prior to the meeting at which the presentation is made.
      Award recipients will receive a $2,000 honorarium (divided equally among the authors), a framed certificate that will be presented at the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, and travel expenses for the primary author (up to $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international).


AAPS Outstanding Manuscript Award in Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality
(Deadline: April 13, 2009)
      The AAPS Outstanding Manuscript Award in Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality recognizes outstanding achievement in pharmaceutical analysis and quality as demonstrated by author(s) in a manuscript published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis.
      The scientific impact of the published work should be the principle used in nominating the paper. This could be based on new concepts or new experimental procedures. The award recipient need not be a member of AAPS.
      The primary author will receive a $500 honorarium and travel expenses of $500. All authors will receive a framed certificate and complimentary registration to the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition where this award will be given.


2009 AAPS Outstanding Manuscript in Modeling and Simulation

      The AAPS Outstanding Manuscript in Modeling and Simulation Award is intended to recognize outstanding achievement in modeling and simulation in drug development as demonstrated by the author in the quality and originality of a manuscript published in any peer-reviewed journal.
      The scientific impact of the published work should be the principle used in nominating the paper and can be based on new concepts, new modeling procedures, or in the application of modeling and simulation in drug development. The paper must have been published within two years prior to the meeting at which the presentation is made. The recipient of the award need not be a member of AAPS.
      The lead author will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a framed certificate which will be presented at the AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, and travel expenses up to $1,000 to be paid as reimbursement following the meeting. If the lead author is a non-AAPS member, a one year complimentary AAPS membership will also be presented. If the lead author cannot attend the meeting, travel expenses will be paid to a designee who will accept the award on behalf of the lead author.


AAPS Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award

      This award recognizes the accomplishments of an individual that has been outstanding because of the impact of his/her work in the pharmaceutical sciences and technologies. The work must have significantly advanced the frontier of the field and must be demonstrated by a continued effort that involves the testing and establishment of basic concepts. These concepts must have important scientific significance and have stimulated research investigations by others.
      This prestigious award will be given only when a worthy candidate is identified, and will be presented no more than every two years. The award winner will receive a $10,000 honorarium in addition to a suitably inscribed Steuben Eagle. Travel expenses will be reimbursed (up to $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international) after the meeting.


AAPS Graduate Student Symposium in Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality

      This program recognizes excellence in graduate education in the fields of pharmaceutics, bioanalytical chemistry and pharmaceutical analysis. The APQ Section of AAPS is pleased to support the continuation of excellence in education in the pharmaceutical sciences.
      There are no citizenship requirements for this award and all interested candidates are encouraged to apply. Your research may be submitted to only one AAPS graduate symposium committee for consideration or your submission will be disqualified from all symposia.
      Students must be in their final year of graduate studies leading to the Ph.D. degree (or will be awarded their Ph.D. in 2009). On the basis of submitted abstracts and summaries, four students will be selected to present their research at the Graduate Student Symposium at the AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition.

AAPS Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award in Pharmaceutical Technologies

      This award stimulates and encourages graduate students to prepare their research for publication in AAPS PharmSciTech. It also encourages graduate students to present their research at the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition.
      Graduate students submitting their dissertation research who will have defended their research and completed requirements for the Ph.D. degree at their respective university within the year of the award are eligible to participate. There are no citizenship requirements for this award. Graduate students selected for this award will be asked to present their abstract in both poster and podium formats.
      Each student selected will receive a complimentary registration to the 2009 Annual Meeting and Exposition, a commemorative plaque, and a cash award of $500 (both of which will be presented at the Annual Meeting). AAPS Lipid-based Drug Delivery Graduate Student Award

      The AAPS Formulation Design and Development Section and the AAPS Lipid-based Drug Delivery Systems Focus Group, through the generosity of Gattefossé, is sponsoring an annual award to acknowledge excellence in research conducted at the graduate level pertaining to the field of lipid-based drug delivery.
      This award focuses on recent significant contributions to the science brought about by highly innovative research. A partial list of relevant research topics of recent awardees include: elucidating the role of lipid excipients in bioavailability enhancement; establishing relevant dissolution test methods and criteria for IVIV correlations; and formulation techniques; and process technologies. All interested candidates engaged in their final year of graduate studies leading to a Ph.D. degree (or to be awarded in the year of submission) are encouraged to apply. The applicant must be an AAPS member in good standing and willing to attend the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, if selected.
      The candidate selected will present his/her research at the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, November 8-12, in Los Angeles, California. The awardee will receive a cash award of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque, both of which will be presented to the recipient during the Opening Ceremonies. In addition, the awardee will receive a sticker from AAPS indicating his/her work as “award winner” for posting on poster board. AAPS Lipid-based Drug Delivery Outstanding Research Award

      The AAPS Formulation Design and Development Section and the AAPS Lipid-based Drug Delivery Systems Focus Group, through the generosity of Gattefossé, sponsor an annual award to acknowledge truly outstanding research promoting drug delivery by lipid-based systems and technology.
      This award focuses on recent significant contributions to the science brought about by highly innovative research. A partial list of relevant research topics of recent awardees include elucidating the role of lipid excipients in bioavailability enhancement; establishing relevant dissolution test methods and criteria for IVIV correlations; formulation techniques; and process technologies. The applicant must be an AAPS member in good standing. Scientists of all backgrounds working in industry, government, research institutes, or universities, including postdoctoral fellows, may apply.       The candidate selected will present his/her research at the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, November 16-20, in Atlanta, Georgia. The awardee will receive a cash award of $10,000 and a commemorative plaque, both of which will be presented to the recipient during the Opening Ceremonies, along with a complimentary AAPS annual meeting registration and reimbursement of travel expenses ($1,000 domestic/$1,500 international) after the meeting.


AAPS New Investigator Grant in Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism

      The award, given biennially, is a one-time grant of $10,000 to be used to support the research effort of an individual actively engaged in training graduate students and carrying out basic research in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and drug metabolism.
      Nominees must demonstrate a commitment to conduct research in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and drug metabolism. This research may include animal or human experimental studies, and involve in vivo or in vitro experimental designs. The research should be innovative and on a new frontier of science.
      The nominee must have the potential for outstanding achievement in teaching and research in these areas, as well as the potential to be a future leader in pharmaceutical education and research. Nominees must have less than four years of academic experience and less than seven years of total postdoctoral experience. The award is open to individuals conducting their research in a university setting or other nonprofit environment. There are no citizenship requirements. All interested candidates are encouraged to apply. The award consists of $10,000 (all funds must be provided to the researcher; none of the money may be used for university overhead, indirect or administrative costs), a certificate that will be presented to the award recipient at the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, and reimbursed travel expenses (maximum $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international).

AAPS Research Achievement Awards

      The 2009 AAPS Research Achievement Awards recognize outstanding scientists who have conducted fundamental research that has had significant impact in the fields of Clinical Pharmacology and Translational Research or Manufacturing Science & Engineering. Award recipients will receive a $2,000 honorarium, a framed certificate, complimentary registration to the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, and travel expenses (up to $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international) that will be reimbursed after the meeting.

AAPS David J.W. Grant Award in Physical Pharmacy

      The AAPS David J. W. Grant Award in Physical Pharmacy is intended to recognize outstanding scientists who have conducted fundamental or practical research that has had significant impact in the fields of Physical Pharmacy. Candidates in all areas of Physical Pharmacy will be considered.
      Award recipients will receive a $2,000 honorarium, a framed certificate which will be presented at the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, November 8 – November 12, in Los Angeles, California, and travel expenses (maximum $1,000 domestic/$1,500 international), which will be reimbursed following the meeting. The recipients will also receive a complimentary meeting registration.


AAPS Postdoctoral Fellow

      The AAPS Postdoctoral Fellow Award is given annually to one individual who has demonstrated excellence in his/her research work during a postdoctoral training period and shows exceptional promise in future contributions to pharmaceutical sciences. The award is based on the scientific merits of an abstract submission to the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition and recommendations of mentoring scientists. The award is open to both members and non-members of AAPS. The goal of this award is to encourage young investigators to broaden their training through postdoctoral research experience, to recognize the role and contribution of postdoctoral fellows in pharmaceutical research and development, and to cultivate the participation of postdoctoral fellows in AAPS activities.
      The award recipient will receive a framed certificate, $1,000 to be used for travel expenses and a complimentary 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition registration.


AAPS Dr. Rainer Hoffman Product Through Science Award

      The Formulation Design and Development Section, through the generosity of Lohmann Therapie-Systeme AG (LTS), are sponsoring an annual award to recognize scientists from academia or industry who were able to develop a drug delivery systems based on science which has already been commercialized. The award is open to individuals in academia and industry. Applicants do not need to be AAPS members. Applicants can be self-nominated. Selection will be made on the basis of the applicant judged by the committee to have provided the most outstanding contributions in the above field through research. The individual selected will receive a cash award of $10,000 and a commemorative plaque, travel expenses and a complimentary registration to the 2009 AAPS Annual Meeting and Expositions to be held November 8-12 in Los Angeles, California.
