A New Era at AAPSPremier Pharmaceutical Scientist Association Announces 2009 Executive Council and Section Leadership
ARLINGTON, Va. (September 15, 2008) –Danny D. Shen, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of Pharmacy and Professor of Pharmaceutics at the University of Washington, has been elected to serve as President-Elect of the 13,500 member American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), based in Arlington, Virginia. He will begin his term in November of 2008 at the AAPS Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, which anticipates an attendance of over 8,500.
On behalf of AAPS, the association’s Executive Director, John Lisack, Jr., CAE, congratulated Dr. Shen on his victory. “Dr. Shen is a Charter Member of AAPS and has contributed greatly over the years, not only to this association, but to the pharmaceutical sciences as a whole,” Lisack said. “We are very excited to have him bring such a wealth of experience to this prestigious position.”
As President-Elect, Dr. Shen will join 2009 President Patrick P. DeLuca, Ph.D.; Immediate Past President Karen Habucky, Ph.D.; Treasurer, Phil Mayer, Ph.D.; and John Lisack, Jr., CAE on the Executive Committee of the AAPS Executive Council.
Dr. Shen commented in a candidate statement that he hopes to uphold the association’s reputation as a respected intellectual and professional scientific community. He added that this can best be achieved “through strong investment of AAPS resources in ensuring up-to-date, rich and innovative scientific programming at our annual meetings and national workshops, supporting and promoting the AAPS-sponsored scientific journals, and sustaining networking and training opportunities for our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.”
Dr. Shen went on to state that his years of service to AAPS have allowed him to work closely with the association’s voluntary leadership and administrative staff. “It has been a joy and a privilege for me to associate with such a fine group of colleagues,” he said. “I look forward to further opportunities to work with the AAPS leadership.”
In addition to the new President-Elect, Jeffrey S. Barrett, Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Gary A. Thompson, Ph.D., of Proctor & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, were both named an AAPS Member-at-Large, having been elected to three-year terms.
