Two AAPS Visionaries, Drs. Arthur Mlodozeniec and Joseph Robinson, Pass Away Over Labor Day Weekend

Prominent Scientists and Past Presidents of the American Association of Pharmacutical Scientists (AAPS) Helped Shape the Organization Over 20 Years

ARLINGTON, Va. (September 11, 2006) -

Arthur Mlodozeniec, Ph.D.

A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from his passion, not his position.

It is not often that one man has a passion for his work, enthusiasm for life, and commitment to excellence comparable to that of Arthur Mlodozeniec, Ph.D., founding member and Past President of the American Association of Pharmacutical Scientists (AAPS), and General Manager of PHARMout Laboratories, a bioanalytical laboratory contract firm in Menlo Park, California.

“Art was one of those people who you instantly felt comfortable around. He told fantastic stories and was an absolutely brilliant scientist,” said AAPS Executive Director, John Lisack, CAE. “He showed the association’s staff and members what makes pharmaceutical science so unique and was an inspiration to us all. We will miss him deeply.”

Dr. Mlodozeniec had over 30 years of senior management experience at Upjohn, Roche, Merck and Syntex. He co-founded three companies and was involved in seven start-ups. A Fellow of AAPS, Dr. Mlodozeniec earned his B.S. degree cum laude from Fordham University College of Pharmacy in New York, and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry/Pharmaceutics from the University of Wisconsin under Dr. Takeru Higuchi. A native of Buffalo, New York, he spent most of his 30-year career in both industrial and academic endeavors.

“AAPS owes a great debt to Art. The strategic plan that he was so instrumental in developing served as the template upon which our association was founded,” commented AAPS’ first President, Les Benet, Ph.D. “He was the driving force behind our very successful exhibit program, and through the years he continued to suggest innovations and challenge the status quo of our association. I, and all of us, will miss him greatly.”

Joseph R. Robinson, Ph.D.

What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.

Joseph R. Robinson, Ph.D., founding member of and Past President of AAPS, spent the last years of his life as a professor and Pharmaceutics Division Chair in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin, which is also where he earned his Ph.D. His joy of learning and more importantly, of sharing his knowledge and discoveries with his students and peers, is a testament to his lifelong work as a scientist, educator, and entrepreneur.

“Trained as a classical ‘physical pharmacist,’ Joe was an early pioneer in applying physical/chemical principles to biological systems,” said AAPS Past President Tom Patton, Ph.D., an early student of Dr. Robinson. “Equally important as his scientific contributions, however, was his mentorship to so many. I owe my entire professional career to the faith and support that Joe provided me. I am not alone in this regard. Joe Robinson will live on through his body of scientific work as well as through those he trained.”

Dr. Joseph Robinson was considered a world leader and pioneer in ophthalmic and other drug delivery research and has 30 years of experience forming new companies and serving as a consultant. The founder of two successful public companies, InSite Vision and Columbia Labs, his research and development on bioadhesive polymers has been utilized and commercialized. Dr. Robinson has published more than 230 scientific journal articles, chapters, and books, and has received several prestigious awards, including the Ebert Prize (1989), the Maurice-Marie Janot Medal (1989), the Nagai Award (1991), the AAPS Research Achievement Award (1991), the Controlled Release Society (CRS) Founders Award (1993), the AAPS Dale E. Wurster Pharmaceutical Research Award (1996), the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) Takeru Higuchi Research Prize (1997), and the AAPS Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award (1999).

“Joe was a wonderful president and drove the association’s growth with fervor and dedication during his term in 1992,” said John Lisack, CAE, Executive Director of AAPS. “It was this year that AAPS first established the Regulatory Sciences Section and steadily grew as a whole. AAPS is fortunate to have been blessed with leaders such as Dr. Robinson.”
