Chapter Information

The University of Pittsburgh student chapter of the American Association for Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) was established in July 2004. The purpose of this chapter is to enhance educational, research and employment opportunities in the pharmaceutical sciences. Specifically, our objectives are to increase student participation in AAPS activities and to provide educational opportunities regarding careers, drug development, and advances in the pharmaceutical sciences. Other objectives include providing opportunities for professional advancement and leadership development and to promote outreach activities that further the goals and objectives of AAPS and our student chapter.

Proposed Activities and Events

2006-2007

  1. Bimonthly meetings to discuss School of Pharmacy and university wide activities and issues concerning the graduate and professional community (lunch/or dinner provided).
  2. Student Orientation picnic: August 21st 2006, at Schenley Park. Faculty, staff, graduate students and upcoming students. Event sponsored by the Pharmacy school.
  3. Ice cream social: September 27th 2006. Faculty, staff, and graduate students.
  4. October 29th to November 2nd: student chapter members will attend the 2006 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition.
  5. November 30th: Visiting Scientist Program Series. Part 1: Drug Discovery: Bruce Aungst from Quest Pharmaceuticals will spend a day visiting our school, which will include an one hour seminar.
  6. December (2nd week): social dinner with graduate students. End of the year celebration. Event planned with the Graduate Student Organization (GSO).
  7. January 2007: Visiting Scientist Program Series. Part 2: Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery: Partha Mukherjee from Pharmaceutical and Analytical R&D at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.
  8. February, 2007- School of Pharmacy’s Graduate Education and Research at the University of Pittsburgh (GEAR-UP) Program held annually. The purpose of this weekend program is to introduce pharmaceutical sciences graduate education to approximately 40 interested students recruited nationally. Some of the planned events include ½ day rotations in two laboratories, a poster session displaying current graduate student work, and an informal lunch and dinner with graduate students.
  9. Late spring 2007: Career Alumni weekend. An event in association with the School of Pharmacy. The event will include a mentoring breakfast with Alumni and graduate students, and career orientation seminars (preparing a CV, preparing for an interview, etc.) .This career day will also involve students from multiple chapters, recruiters, and representatives from both academia and industry.

Activities

2005-2006

  • November 6th-10th- 17 student chapter members attended the 2005 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition.
  • February, 2006- Graduate students participated in the School of Pharmacy's Graduate Education and Research at the University of Pittsburgh (GEAR-UP) Program. The purpose of this program was to introduce pharmaceutical sciences graduate education to approximately 40 interested students recruited nationally. An example of some of the events include one day rotations in two laboratories, poster session displaying current graduate student work, and an informal lunch and dinner with graduate students.
  • Our chapter submitted four proposals to 2006 AAPS Annual Meeting. Two proposals have been selected: a sunrise session: Nanotechnology and biomaterials for drug delivery systems (Oct. 31, 2006, 7:00 am - 8:15 am); and a roundtable: How safe are drug delivery devices? - An in vitro/ in vivo approach for toxicity and efficacy determination of controlled release devices (Nov. 1, 2006, 9:00 am - 11:00 am)
