  AAPS-University of Michigan Student Chapter

The University of Michigan student chapter

Chapter Information

The University of Michigan AAPS student chapter was initiated in 1995. The members of the student organization are given an opportunity to learn about the latest developments in the field of pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, pharmacogenomic, proteomic, bioinformatic and drug delivery research. The AAPS student chapter strives to provide its members with an opportunity to interact with people in academia and industry as well as make useful contacts. Besides the academic enrichment, we also encourage social events which help develop a bond between the chapter members who come from diverse backgrounds, but are currently working in related areas of research. Further, we work towards promoting pharmaceutics as an area of research amongst undergraduate and graduate students from other disciplines.

Proposed Activities and Events

  • Establishment/Membership: Membership meetings will be held in September 2008 and August 2009 to recruit new AAPS members and elect student chapter officers for the upcoming year. First-time members will be provided with application forms to apply for AAPS memberships.
  • Professional Activities:
    • Pharmaceutics Journal Club- The chapter will continue to support and organize the journal club to promote and enhance graduate education and exposure, familiarize members with emerging trends in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, facilitate analytical interpretations and constructive criticisms, and create an environment for cohesive learning.
    • Graduate Student Meetings- The chapter will arrange travel and accommodations for a group of students to travel to represent the department at PGSRM in June 2009 in West Lafayette, IN at Purdue University. The chapter will also participate in other pharmaceutics meetings including the Great Lake Conference in the summer of 2009.
  • Mentoring:
    • Pharmaceutical Sciences Awareness Program- In coordination with our coordinator of graduate student recruitment and outreach, the chapter will continue to spread awareness amongst undergraduate students in different scientific disciplines about the research opportunities in pharmaceutical sciences.
    • Outreach Program- The chapter will have an outreach program with surrounding high school students to introduce the program of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Michigan.
  • Community Service: The chapter will participate in a volunteer activity at a local children’s museum over a weekend in March 2009.
  • Social Activities:
    • Welcome Picnic- The chapter hosted the Annual College of Pharmacy Welcome Picnic in September 2008 to welcome students and foster interactions between new and returning graduate students as well as post-doctorates and faculties
    • Monthly Social Activities- Monthly social gatherings will be continued to increase professional and social interaction among students in the program. Activities will include apple picking, cross-country skiing, Secret Santa, softball, snow-tubing, kayaking, soccer, game night, and attending a college hockey game
    • Holiday Party- A potluck party will be organized within the department to celebrate the ending of the fall semester in December 2008.
    • End-of-term potluck picnic- In April 2009, a potluck picnic will be organized within the department to celebrate the winter-semester-end.
