Dr. Giacomini's keynote address.
The AAPS-University of Kansas Student Chapter was initiated in 1995 and has existed
continuously since then. The chapter is highly active in the recruiting of new students
to the department, nominating departmental faculty for awards, planning social events
to encourage student interaction, and organizing lecture series. Chapter goals are:
- To increase pharmaceutical, and other discipline, student participation in AAPS,
now and in the future;
- To better familiarize traditional pharmaceutical and non-traditional pharmaceutical
discipline students with the AAPS organization on a local and national level;
- To reach out to undergraduate pharmacy and non-pharmacy students interested in a
career in the pharmaceutical sciences;
- To provide a stronger sense of belonging to students who are not always afforded
the opportunity to attend the national and/or regional meetings;
- To educate students about the pharmaceutical industry and career opportunities through
invited speakers who are experts in their area;
- To educate students about pharmaceutical research, including the regulatory aspects
concerning research conducted in industrial labs, through invited speakers and presentations
by group members at meetings.
Proposed Activities and Events
- Various social events including ice cream socials, pizza lunches, and happy hours
- Formation of a Pharmaceutical Chemistry Graduate Student Organization to encourage
involvement within the department and allow AAPS to focus on more inter-departmental
activities such as lecture series, community services, etc.
