Student Chapter Trip to AstraZeneca

Place: Wilmington, Delaware

Purpose: Tour AstraZeneca Research and Development Site

Visiting Students: Patrice Jackson, Crystal Spinks, Dhara Shah, Henry North, David Awotwe-Otoo, Zufan Debebe, Debo Ogunjirin, and Mariano Alexander

The AstraZeneca site tour was a very informative visit for all the students. This particular site in Delaware focuses on developing therapeutic agents that target disorders of the CNS. The tour started off with a meet-and-greet with Peggy Nockett-Patti and Emily Cox of College Recruitment where all students introduced themselves and gave their research interests. PowerPoint presentations where given by lead scientist in various R & D areas within AstraZeneca; Cathy Dantzman of Chemistry, Doug Burdette of Discovery DMPK, Scott Grimm of Development DMPK, and Marty Deberardinis of Pharmaceutical Analytical Research & Development. The presentations focused on the various tasks fulfilled allowing AstraZeneca to be the 5th largest Pharmaceutical Company in the world. During lunch we were all treated to pizza, where we asked a number of questions ranging from preparing a CV to stress levels in industry. There was no question left unanswered. After lunch we toured various labs ending with the pilot plant. The tour opened our eyes to all the things that we have experienced within graduate school and the many more things that we all have to learn.

All the students were truly grateful for the time and effort AstraZeneca took to make the day a memorable experience.
