First Annual Regional Science Carnival

On Saturday, April 7, 2007, Florida A & M University’s student chapter of AAPS held its first annual Regional Science Carnival. The science carnival was geared towards introducing elementary, middle and high school students to science by taking a hands-on approach for the participants. Various science departments within the university, Florida State University’s Magnetic Lab, Tallahassee Community College, Tallahassee Junior Museum, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Forensics Lab, just to name a few, also joined the student chapter in this exciting event.

The science carnival drew in over 100 students from the surrounding areas in which they had an opportunity to work with chromatography, ointment compounding, chemiluminescence, etc. As students made their way from table to table, they were given information about the experiment they would execute. At the end of the day, students participated in the science challenge game where they answered questions pertaining to the experiments that went on throughout the day. Winners of the science challenge received awards for first through third place. The students also had a chance to win a mini microscope, CSI crime lab kit, human model, and telescope that were raffled to four lucky participants.

The chapter provided hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy in keeping with the name, “carnival.” When asked about her children’s experience with the science carnival, Lisa Akinsola said, “I loved the fact that everyone at each table were fully knowledgeable in their respective sciences and the hands-on experience for the children was fantastic.” Florida A & M University’s AAPS student chapter will hold its second regional science carnival next year and hopes to double its participants.
