  AAPS-University of Arizona Student Chapter

Chapter Information

Lead by chapter advisor Dr. Paul Myrdal, the University of Arizona AAPS Student Chapter been busy, and they don’t plan to slow down any time soon. Dr.Myrdal explained, "After discovering that general knowledge of pharmaceutical science graduate programs outside the College of Pharmacy is virtually non-existent, the student chapter spearheaded a collective effort to increase awareness of their favorite field." The main idea was to get the word out to undergraduates in hopes of providing them with another option that they may not have considered for graduate studies and, more importantly, a rewarding career.

Proposed Activities

2006-2007

  1. At the end of August, we were lucky enough to have Steve Stein, an Advanced Research Specialist from 3M Drug Delivery Systems join us as a visiting scientist. Steve works mainly in the inhalation arena, an area that is of great interest at the University of Arizona. Our AAPS Student Chapter funds helped bring him in for the visit.
  2. During the fall of 2006, our student chapter will welcome the new pharmacy students at orientation day, and set up an AAPS booth to represent and promote the student chapter. We also plan on visiting different undergraduate groups involved in the sciences, to better inform them of the pharmaceutics field. Our AAPS student chapter fund hopes to pay for handouts and food for the undergraduate meetings that we are invited to speak at. These activities will carry over to the spring 2007 semester.
  3. During the fall and in the early spring, we anticipate a number of student-members graduating. Our AAPS Student Chapter hopes to pay for a goodbye card and group luncheon. We believe it is important to honor, support, and thank those that are graduating, and use the AAPS money as part of the finances that aid in the celebrations.
  4. During the spring of 2007, we plan on having a student seminar series, where each student will give an oral presentation on their current research. Our AAPS student chapter fund hopes to pay for snacks during these seminars.
  5. Each semester, the student chapter likes to host at least 1 visiting scientist, and this year is no exception. The bulk of the AAPS Student Chapter funds go towards hosting these visitors. At this time, no visitors are scheduled, as Steve Stein from 3M was able to visit only a month ago, but we anticipate lining up some visits at or before the AAPS Annual Meeting.
